Is the Goal.

"Every Vote Does Count"

Those were the words of Jim Rex, who would become South Carolina's sixteenth State Superintendent of Education, as he watched vote totals come in on Election Night. It had been a hard fought campaign that had come to a close with Rex visiting each of the State's 46 counties in a record-breaking 46 hours during the final days of the campaign.

It would be in the early morning hours on November 8 when he and his supporters learned that the election was not yet done. Over the next two weeks, and seemingly endless counts and recounts of the ballots, Rex and his supporters would wait for a final outcome. When it was all said and done, he prevailed by a margin of 455 votes of more than a million cast, making history as the closest election for statewide office ever recorded.

An underdog from the start, Rex built his campaign on a positive message and a shoe leather approach that would become his trademark. Outspent but not out maneuvered, he took his positive campaign for reforming South Carolina's schools to every community in South Carolina. Now, as Superintendent of Education, he continues to work to build grassroots support for his comprehensive plan for education reform.
